Mr. Smith, a satellite TV enthusiast, had previously connected his family to a satellite TV system using a Quad LNB (Quad Output Low Noise Block) for 3 rooms. However, as the family’s needs grew and now wanted additional TV signals in 2 more rooms, he decided to add a 5/12 satellite stand-alone multiswitch to the system to connect more satellite receivers.

Question:

After purchasing and installing the 5/12 stand-alone multiswitch, Mr. Smith noticed that his system didn’t seem to be working properly. He wonders if he needs to replace the Quad LNB with Quattro LNB (LNB with four outputs but no control signals) or if is there another solution.

To solve this problem before, let’s understand what multiswitch, Quattro-LNB and quad-LNB are.

• What is a Multiswitch?

A multiswitch is a component positioned between the LNB and the satellite receiver. From the receiver’s perspective, the multiswitch functions as an adaptable switchable LNB that provides signals in various satellite polarizations, requiring specific control commands for selection.

• What is a Quad LNB?

The QuadLNB is an integrated LNB (Low Noise Block) that provides four independent output ports. It is capable of providing all signals  (V/L, V/H, H/L & H/H) from the entire Ku band to four receivers.

• What is a Quattro LNB?

A QuattroLNB is a specialized type of LNB (Low Noise Block) designed specifically for shared dish installations ( multiswitch system installation), distinct from the Quad LNB. It features a single feedhorn and four outputs, each dedicated to delivering one of the Ku sub-bands (V/L, V/H, H/L & H/H) to a multiswitch or an array of multiswitches. These multiswitches then distribute the signals to connected receivers, providing each tuner with the required sub-band.

• What is the difference between a QuattroLNB and a QuadLNB?

It’s important to note the difference between a Quattro LNB and a Quad LNB: While they may appear similar, a Quad LNB can directly support four receivers, with each output supplying signals from the entire Ku band. In contrast, a Quattro LNB is specifically designed for connection to a multiswitch in a shared dish distribution system, with each output delivering only a quarter of the Ku band signals.

• Why does quad LNB not work properly with the multiswitch?

It is according to the principle of the satellite TV system that the Quad LNB needs to have control signals generated by the satellite multiswitch to work properly.

That is, the multiswitch needs to have a built-in 22kHz generator to control the LNB by sending a 22kHz pulse signal. However, if the multiswitch does not support the Quad LNB’s control signals, connecting the Quad LNB may result in the system not working.

In this case, Mr. Smith’s multiswitch may not have a built-in 22kHz generator, which is usually only supported by Quattro LNBs.

Connecting a Quad LNB may therefore result in the inability to generate the required control signals, which could affect the proper operation of the system.

Solution:

1. Check Multiswitch Specifications

Mr. Smith should double-check the specifications of the Multiswitch to confirm that it supports the Quad LNB control signal. If the specification indicates that only Quattro LNBs are supported, then replacing it with a Quattro LNB may be the best option to resolve the problem.

2. Replacing the LNB

If the multiswitch can not generate control signals for the Quad LNB. then Mr Smith may consider replacing the LNB with a Quattro LNB.  So that his system will work properly and will not be limited by control signals.

3. Upgrading a Multiswitch

If Mr Smith does need to connect a Quad LNB, then he may want to consider upgrading to a switch with a built-in 22kHz generator that supports the Quad LNB control signal.

4. Adding Two 22kHz Generators

Adding two 22kHz generators between the existing Quad LNB and the switch is also a viable option.
